Ka_min Tonbodama Glass Bead Jewellery
Mika was born and raised in Matsuyama on the island of Shikoku in South Eastern Japan, here she learnt to create the beautiful tonbodama jewellery you can see pictured on these pages. She is now in Australia where she lives with her family and continues to create glass bead accessories and develop her tonbodama artistic skills.
Tonbodama History
After having conquered three major Korean cities, the Empress Jinguu (170-269) took a few glass bead artisans home with her to Japan. She had these artisans live and work close to the Naniwa Imperial Court, where these Korean artisans introduced the Japanese into the making of glass beads.
It is believed this was the beginning of glass bead history in Japan. During the 1600-1800s the glass beads were known as “Saka Tonbo” and “Senshuu Dama” and from these two glass beads, today’s Tonbodama was named.
