Congratulations on your decision to learn Japanese! You will find that learning another language can be interesting and fun.
Languages are doorways into other cultures and increase your communication skills. It is true at the same time that not all languages are equally easy to learn. The simplest route to take with a new language is to choose one that is somewhat related to their own, or at least uses the same alphabet. Japanese is a challenging language because it has its own set of rules for reading and writing! There are, fortunately, some ways to make the study of Japanese a little simpler.
One thing you can do is buy or rent Anime videos! This won’t even feel like work; you can enjoy watching the show and you’ll learn new words and phrases. Anime are animated shows and movies that are created in Japan. Anime is now quite popular in the West, and you can find it in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English (which won’t do you much good!). This type of animation now has a cult following all over the Western world, and can be found in Japanese with subtitles or dubbed in English, though the latter won’t help you learn Japanese! It shouldn’t be hard to find Anime; you can find free versions of it online, or you can rent or buy some at a video store. You have to find shows that are in Japanese with subtitles, so you can listen and read the subtitles. You will find that this is a great method to learn words and how they are put together into sentences. This is probably the most enjoyable method of learning a new language! There are quite a few good Anime programs available, including Fullmetal Alchemist, Trigun and Cowboy Bebop.
Start reading Manga. Manga are graphic novels written in Japanese (and some are translated to other languages as well) By reading and following along as best you can, you get great practice reading in Japanese. Japanese writing goes from the back of the book to the front, and from right to left; by reading these books you’ll start to become accustomed to this style as well as what all the characters and sentences mean. The translation into your language will also teach you about popular speech and slang. Things like Manga and Anime can teach you things you won’t get from taking a class! If you look for Manga, you should also know that they are often written with very adult type language and themes!
Flash Cards are a good idea. You can use a few different kinds of flash cards when learning Japanese. You should have a set that is for memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. You also want to be able to read in Japanese, so you should have flash cards that teach you how to form and understand all the characters of the alphabet.
You can use one side of the cards for the Japanese characters; on the other side use your native alphabet, spelling out phonetically how to say the word or phrase. When using several sets of flash cards, it’s important to keep them separated; mixing them up could cause confusion! If you want to learn a language, you should try anything that might possibly help. The key to making the process a smooth one is to figure out which learning tips and tricks work best for you. Don’t ever get discouraged; many people have learned Japanese before, and you can too. The key is to make up your mind that you will continue learning until you can speak, read and write like someone who’s been speaking Japanese their whole life!
